Bonding with patients for better care

“I treasure the opportunities I have to develop lifelong relationships with my patients and their families and to be a part of bringing new lives into the world on a daily basis. The bonds that I make with patients of all ages are important to me. I hope to give them honest, realistic information about their health based on current evidence. I’m a good listener, too, and patients seem to feel comfortable telling me about their real concerns. I relate to them as a woman and as a mother.”

The miracle of new life.
“It was after the birth of my oldest nephew over two decades ago that I really realized the miracle of pregnancy and childbirth. I wanted to be part of helping women take care of themselves, both physically and emotionally, as they prepared for their new–or renewed–role in life.”

After sixteen years as a Labor and Delivery Nurse, I returned to school and earned a Masters in Nursing degree. Now a Nurse Practitioner, I’ve taken my role one step farther in helping women through the different seasons of their life.

Building relationships where women are heard, valued and respected.

“Even though women share similar experiences, their perspectives and stories are so different, changing with each phase of life. I seek to earn my patient’s trust and strive to provide quality care and provide accurate and reliable information to help women make healthcare decisions that impact them and their family.”

In her spare time, Katie and her husband are very busy with their four children, enjoying snow skiing and camping around the Pacific Northwest.

Providing supportive, individualized and integrative care
“It was after witnessing my first delivery in the middle of the night many years ago in nursing school that I knew caring for women throughout the pregnancy and birth experience was the path I was meant to be on.” Shortly thereafter, I became a Labor & Delivery nurse and had the privilege to work in several renowned hospitals around the country. This enabled me to obtain invaluable experience both personally and clinically.

Actively involving patients in their medical decisions
“I am passionate in helping women take an active role in their health care by providing them with informed options and empowering them to make their own decisions. By focusing on each woman’s real-life circumstances including her social, family, and medical history it allows me to tailor individualized care for each patient. In my role as a Nurse Practitioner I strive to provide women with the knowledge they need to achieve the healthiest state of well-being as possible. I enjoy working with women across their lifespan, with a strong focus in assisting in the management of high risk pregnancies.”

Andrea’s outside interest include spending time with her friends and her dogs, exploring the great outdoors of the PNW, fishing, working in her garden, cooking and volunteering at local charities. She is also an active member of Nurse Practitioners in Women’s Health.

MELISSA MORGAN, IBCLC, RLC, LE

Lactation Consultant

“I’ve always had a passion for women’s issues, especially as they pertain to healthcare in the childbearing years. I was first introduced to the profession when I had trouble feeding my oldest son. The lactation consultant who helped us also helped me realized the significance of the breastfeeding relationship and how intertwined it is with the health of the individual, as well as the community. When she approached me with a job and mentorship opportunity, of course I jumped at the chance!”

Melissa, an internationally board-certified, registered lactation consultant and lactation educator, began her lactation career in 1998. She attended the Evergreen Perinatal Lactation Educator (CLE) program and began assisting and counseling families in the support group and consult setting, helping with basic breastfeeding and observing more complex consultations with her mentor, obtaining the necessary contact hours for the IBLCE examination. Melissa then went on to become a La Leche League Leader in 2007, starting and facilitating the mother-to-mother support group in Liberty Lake. When her mentor expressed a desire to retire, Melissa had acquired over 2,500 clinical contact hours and sat for the IBLCE examination in 2010, earning her IBCLC registration. She immediately opened her private practice, Nurture Normally, serving families in Spokane, Spokane Valley and Coeur d’Alene, and when her youngest child started kindergarten in 2012, began offering her lactation services full-time. She has developed a specialty in helping families with tongue-tied babies and also enjoys meeting the specialized needs of the adopting and non-traditional families.

Now, in addition to helping families feed their babies, she mentors lactation students and provides professional lactation education to physicians, midwives, doulas and other healthcare practitioners. She is currently co-president of the Spokane Breastfeeding Coalition, is part of a joint venture that supports and educates other lactation consultants, maintains membership in the United States Lactation Consultants Association (USLCA) and other professional organizations, and presents at local, national, and international conferences. She also has written articles for local health and lifestyle magazines as well as local and national blogs.

In her spare time, Melissa enjoys bikepacking and mountain biking with her three children and maintains an active yoga and meditation practice.
